Created Issue: Add silverlight support [30478]

Silverlight don't support {x:static ...} so refactoring of silverlight xaml doesn't work.
For silverlight applications extract to resource should at least support generating the same binding as used in the silverlight business application.

It'd be good to have Visual Studio 2010 support.

What does work in C# and does not work in VB. I'm using it in VB.
Yes in VB there is only item "Extract to Resource" under "Refactor". This is also the only item provided by this plugin. The other items seen in C# are part of Visual Studio, but AFAIK Microsoft does not provide any refactoring for VB :-(.
And yes the "Extract to resource" is shown even when you right-click outside of string literal. This is issues that is in this tool since beginning.

I test your Setup but work only in C# project, not in VB.NET project where I see only an item menu "Extract to Resource" in menu "Refactor". HELP !!!! I' attach e image with the problem.

I've just intalled ResourceRefactoringTool to localize some previously hardcoded strings. I've created nex .resx file (using RRT dialog) and added about 10 strings, it worked like a charm. But today I came back to it and wanted to add one more string I missed. The string appeared in Messages.resx and the original string was preplace by refernece to Messages.STRING class member, but unfortunately it did not generated code in that class. I have not edited the class manually and always answered "Yes to all" when visual studio asked me to reload file (because it was changed outside, since I suppose RRT executed ResGen or some other external tool and this answer workd for me in the past).

It seemed to me, that this appeared when I added another version of resx file (Messages.cs-CZ.resx -- localized string into Czech), well I tried to delete it again (with one class member missing, since i did not reverted the changes) and tried to add another string. The string that was missing before appeared in the class, but the new one (that one I just tried to add) did not.

It seems like a bug to me, but not sure where (I'm not very familiar with VS architecture, since I don't use it very ofte for work). If you need any other info, I'll be glad to make some effort to it.

I'm using VS2008 Pro SP1 and C# language.

Since it is some time that I have reported this issue, noone bothered to look at it. It would be nice to take a look, since the tool is completely useless.

Anyway, I want to confirm, what I have suspected. I have reinstalled visual studio (since I now have new computer) and started to work on the project again. I have actually started to localize another file with a LOT of texts. Everything's fine, I have added a few dozen items and then created a cs-CZ alternative. Then, I've found out that I have forgotten to externalize a few more strings. None of them added entry to the class. This all with up-to-date RRT and VS2008 Pro.

I'd really like someone to look at it, since, as I have said before, it makes this tool useless (at least for me) after the initial stage. And you can imagine how annoying it can be to make 10 or 20 entries manually. Tha't why I have this tool, right?

When both Visual Studio 2008 and 2005 are installed, the Resource Refactoring Tool is not installed on Visual Studio 2008.

What a shame, this is such a useful tool, and it simply does not work. None of the suggestions work for vs2008. Damn shame. Codeplex == Deadpool as fas as VS extensions go.

E.g. in Visual Basic will be replaced with
<Button Content={x:Static res:Resources.MyButton}/>
if it does not exist, xmlns definition will be added like xmlns:res="clr-namespace:Project1.My.Resources"

Somehow I managed to get the missing menu in Visual Studio 2008. Unfortunately I couldn't exactly what I did, but here is a list of what I did lately that may have an impact:

* used various utilities (especially TuneUp and CCleaner) to clean up my computer, including registry
* deleted %WINDIR%\$NtUninstallKB*$ folders
* installed Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and ran the command "C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up\MsiZap.exe G" !!!WARNING, that may corrupt your machine, read documentation WARNING!!!
* reboot
* checkout Resource Refactoring source code, open solution, modify Addins project property -> Debug -> select path to devenv.exe 9.0, build, and execute, then I had it !

Honestly I couldn't tell what fixed my install. It seems that building the source code was not enough as we tried on another computer and it didn't get the menu... Hope this may help anyway

My suggestion is that it should be possible to highlight a series of concatenated string values and extract them as a whole.
As it works today, if you have a string spanning two lines of code, such as:

string = "This is the first line of my string constant " + _
"and this is the second one."

you can't extract them to a single string resource.

A big disadvantage of this is that it makes it impossible to extract to resources any string that contains newlines in VB.Net, as newlines can't be embedded into strings as they can in C#, but they have to be concatenated (be it as Environment.NewLine, vbCrLf, Chr(10), etc).

Also, on a related note, expressions such as:

MyString = "Today is " + VarDate + " and the time is " + VarTime + ".";

could perhaps be recognized as a full string and get refactored to

MyString = String.Format(Resources.MyString, new object[] {VarDate, VarTime});

Same problem over here. What I did:

1. open %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\MSEnvShared\Addins\ResourceRefactor.AddIn
2. remove <HostApplication> tag for VS2005 and change the description
3. load Visual Studio 2008
4. menu not available, but AddIns manager shows modified description
5. ProcessExplorer shows devenv.exe with handles C:\Program Files\Power Toys for Visual Studio\Resource Refactoring Tool\ResourceRefactor.Common.CSharp.dll and C:\Program Files\Power Toys for Visual Studio\Resource Refactoring Tool\Microsoft.VSPowerToys.ResourceRefactor.dll
6. load Visual Studio 2005
7. menu available (!!)

Previously I uninstalled and re-install ResourceRefactoring from this kink: http://www.codeplex.com/Project/Download/FileDownload.aspx?ProjectName=ResourceRefactoring&DownloadId=6846

Anybody found workaround ?

I started with a console application with no resource file.
RRT created file that I named Resources.resx. It created it outside the Properties branch of the project.
I moved it to the Properties branch.
Now RRT is out of sync. When it adds a new string it does not end up in my resource file. If I delete an entry in my resource file, RRT does not reflect the change.

The Refactoring-Tool seems not to work on my german version of VS 2005 (Running on Win 2K SP4 SR1 german). The Addin is marked as loaded within the AddIn-Manager, but the context menu is not shown (see attached screenshot)), no matter if i just click on a string literal or if i mark the literal as selected first.

It seems not to work on Chinese version of VS 2005. I already download 1.0 release of Resource Refactoring Tool, but I don't see the menu item of "Extract to Resource".

I have public resource generated by PublicResXFileCodeGenerator and when I choose to refactor to resource the combo does not show me this resource. This is a VS2008 feature.

A very easy change in Common/ExtractResourceActions.cs can resolve this. I've uploaded patch that solves it. But as mentioned by [workitem:12565], I'm afraid that it is against authors' policy to support 3rd party tools. But that Microsoft one should be supported and it can be done by similar change in ExtractResourceActions.cs. There are listed names of custom tools producing valid resources - for VB and CS separately.
If you wan apply the change and use it, just replace the ExtractResourceActions.cs file, rebuild project and replace all the DLLs c:\Program Files\Power Toys for Visual Studio\Resource Refactoring Tool. No need to dela with wix.
